10.08.26 | Traffic Filter Updates

New Traffic Filter in Search Reports

Starting October 8, the Search Activity and Site Activity dashboards will include a traffic filter that lets you view search volume on your community-facing site by traffic type:
  • Organic – searches we attribute to real people using your site.
  • Bot-driven – searches we attribute to automated sources such as search engine indexers, AI crawlers, and web scrapers.
  • All traffic – the combined total (matches how search volume has been reported up until now).

Organic will be the new default view. When you open your reports, you'll see organic activity first so that the numbers most closely reflect how people in your community are actually using your site. You can toggle to Bot-driven or All traffic at any time.

If you want to...

Use this view:

Understand how people in your community are using your site Organic (default)
See how much automated activity your site is attracting Bot-driven
Compare against reports created before this filter was introduced  All traffic

Why are we adding this filter?

Community-facing sites are publicly accessible, and public sites naturally attract automated traffic. Search engines and AI assistants crawl your pages so they can appear in search results, and automated tools sometimes scan public pages to collect information. All of this registers as search volume, which can make it hard to tell how many searches came from real people.

This filter is about transparency. Rather than silently removing bot activity from your reports, we're showing you both views so you can see what we're detecting and choose the lens that fits your needs.

Frequently-Asked Questions

The filter represents thoughtful, intelligent estimates.

  • Bot behavior is constantly evolving, and no detection method identifies every automated search correctly all of the time.
  • Some bot activity may appear in your Organic view, and occasionally a real person's activity may be categorized as Bot-driven.
  • We treat the Organic view as our best estimate, not an exact count.

Ongoing monitoring may affect historical data trends.

  • Our engineering team monitors traffic patterns and when we confirm activity is bot-driven, we take steps to reduce it and normalize search volumes.
  • We apply detection rules to past activity as well as new activity. Sometimes historical numbers will shift after an update, sometimes noticeably.
  • If a trend line looks different than it did last month, this is the most likely reason. The All traffic view is not affected by these adjustments.
  • We're continuing to improve traffic categorization, and we'll let you know about significant changes that could affect your reporting.

Seeker / individual details are not impacted.

  • Bot traffic only affects search volume reporting.
  • Seeker accounts, referrals, and assessments are unaffected and continue to operate normally.

Your platform is still safe and secure.

  • Indexing and scraping are normal parts of how the internet works.
  • They are not attempts to deny service or steal information.
  • Findhelp continuously monitors for malicious activity and has robust defenses in place to protect your site.
